Want to Know What is a Triathlon?

What is a triathlon?

A triathlon could easily be described as one of the most challenging sporting events on the planet. It’s one of those sports that relies on an unbelievable level of fitness if you want to get any good at it and ability in multiple activities.

In short a triathlon is a three part activity which involves swimming (in open water or a swimming pool, depending on which event you enter), cycling closely followed by running. All three events are done back to back without rest in succession.

There are a number of events within the triathlon group such as a mini or sprint triathlon to the Olympic triathlon then the half ironman (or ironman 70.3) right through to the full ironman.

So now you know exactly what is a triathlon, do you think you’ll be giving it a go?

What Is The Half Ironman Distance?

Triathlons have gained immense popularity over the last few years due to many reasons from wanting to challenge oneself further and achieving targets way over what has been achieved so far in life through to the variation and interest that doing a triathlon brings.

The half ironman distance is almost a mid way race between the Olympic distance triathlon and the full ironman. Add to this this this initial entry point of the mini or sprint triathlon and you you have the whole range of triathlon distances to choose from.

The natural progression if you are considering going the whole half ironman distance is to start with the sprint, to the full triathlon and then the half ironman.

How To Choose A Half Ironman Training Program

Let’s say you’ve decided that you’d like to fulfil your lifetime’s ambition of doing a full ironman, or that you’d be more than happy with just the half version.

That’s agreed, but what’s you’re next step? How do you get started and what should you do??

Well unless you’ve run one before (and to be honest even if you have, you’ll still benefit from some guidance) you will need a half ironman training program to guide you along the way. A good one will not only steer you through potential problems, but also save you time and energy on spending your training doing inefficient things.

The Key To Effective Half Ironman Training

It’s very easy to do way too much during your half ironman training, but it’s also quite possible to not do enough.

There is nothing worse than getting to the day of an event knowing that you’re not really well enough prepared to do your best, this is why your training and preparation has to be just right.

You need to gradually increase the distances of everything gradually but progressively up to a week or two before the day of the race. You also need to try a few sessions where you actually practice all three disciplines at the same time in race order. If your half ironman is going to be in open water then you will definitely need to get out in some and get used to how that feels… it’s completely different to swimming in your local indoor pool.

How To Take Part In A Half Iron Man

A half iron man race is a gruelling race for the very fit and dedicated athlete in you. You can’t suddenly decide to go out a do one off the cuff, you’ll need to prepare very thoroughly and to be honest, you’ll need to have worked your way up the triathlon ranks AND completed a full traithlon first.

The half iron man is an event that is gaining popularity these days as it has all of the challenge needed to make a tough endurance event but it isn’t quite as gruelling as the full ironman competition is.

As with all endurance events you’ll need to prepare thoroughly beforehand, this means completing all stages in sequence a number of times. You need to learn how it feels to follow on one event after another.
